Pierce Atwood – Portland
A respected 120-year-old law firm, Pierce Atwood has reaffirmed its 19th-century Maine heritage by relocating some 250 employees of its Portland office to a newly converted 3-½-floor, 68,000 SF space in the historic Cumberland Cold Storage Building on Merrill’s Wharf. The firm’s close involvement in the design simultaneously produced a highly supportive space for its people, as well as a distinctive ambiance blending past and present. The design playfully contrasts 19th-century construction and materials such as stone, wood and brick with contemporary elements including floor-to-ceiling glass walls, rectilinear and rounded soffits, bold colors, sophisticated lighting, and contemporary furnishings.
