Keurig Green Mountain: Coffee, Culture, and Corporate Commitment

We have been working with Keurig Green Mountain for over eight years, designing numerous facilities for the coffee, brewers and beverages manufacturer. One of our recent projects with the company has been designing their main headquarters. Our objective for the multi-phase project has been to translate the culture, values and Keurig Green Mountain brand into a functional space that houses every part of their business together at one location.

The first phase of the project focused on the Research and Development teams at the company. We developed around 150,000 SF of lab and office space. The goal was to not only design a functional and aesthetic work environment but to also set forth corporate standards going forward. Keurig Green Mountain considers themselves a technology company and wanted their built environment to be innovative, collaborative, creative and sustainable, consistent with their culture and brand.

Keurig Green Mountain is fundamentally a technology company and a leader of innovation in the coffee, brewer and beverages industry. With our objective to house all of Keurig’s business practices on one campus, our first phase focused on the design of their research and development lab areas. We made sure to incorporate the bright and bold KGM colors to reinforce brand, while carefully designing the space to function technically. The lab furniture was strategically designed to be functional and adaptable for different uses and groups.

With the understanding that Keurig Green Mountain will continue to grow, we strategized our design to accommodate for corporate advancement. The Phase I space works to foster closer teamwork and collaboration, as well as dedicates space to the ongoing training and education of the growing staff. There was a need to create a localized and united work environment, that would encourage communication and innovation amongst the various parts of the company. A design focus was thus providing staff with lounge areas, huddle spots, and guided layout to make these necessary interactions natural. We used brightly colored soffits to define these designated areas as a means of wayfinding supported by flexible and comfortable furniture to attract groups of users.

Commitment to Community and the Environment

A core value at Keurig Green Mountain is a commitment to conducting business in a socially responsible manner. Their belief is that corporate success goes hand-in-hand with giving back to the community and protecting the environment. In terms of design, we chose to reflect this value through the use of sustainable and natural materials. Such practice includes an all LED lighting system with daylight controls at the perimeter and use of Greengard certified furniture to name a few. This effort surmounted in the project receiving a LEED Gold certification.

“Brewing a Better World”

Keurig Green Mountain values innovation, integrity, social responsibility, and a dedication to excellence. Their motto of “Brewing a Better World” applies both to their business and these values. We applied this motto to our design by creating a warm and inviting space that encourages a “coffee and conversation culture”. Inviting colors, bold graphics, and strong focus on collaborative areas all worked to achieve this feel. These spaces were strategically placed at the center of the office to enforce office engagement and spontaneous meetings.

The word “Keurig” derives from the Dutch word for ‘excellence’. Our Phase I space is reflective of the successful company and has ultimately worked to help Keurig Green Mountain continue to revolutionize the coffee, brewers and beverage industry by providing them a tailored and strategized space to do so.
